Understanding Beer Metrics

ABV (Alcohol By Volume)

The percentage of alcohol content in the beer. Session beers are under 4%, while imperial styles can exceed 10%.

IBU (International Bitterness Units)

Measures hop bitterness. Light lagers have 5-15 IBU, IPAs range 40-100+. Human perception maxes around 100.

SRM (Standard Reference Method)

Color measurement scale. Pale lagers are 2-4 SRM, amber ales 10-17, stouts 30+.

OG (Original Gravity)

Sugar content before fermentation. Higher OG means more potential alcohol and body.
